Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tang Soo Do?

It is an ancient Korean Art of empty hand and foot fighting for  conditioning and self-defense.  It literally translates to "Tang Open  Hand Way".  Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art style that  has developed over 2000 years. The style of Tang Soo Do can be traced to  the Three Kingdoms period in Korea, Shilla 57 BC – 935 AD, Paekjae 18  BC – 660 AD, and Koguryo 37  - 66 AD. Although rooted in tradition, it  is based upon a scientific approach in the use of the body for  self-defense.  It accents the passive, rather than the aggressive  approach to confrontations - without relinquishing human dignity.  The  development of the legs and superior kicking techniques are some of the  characteristics of Tang Soo Do.  Essentially, Tang Soo Do has been  designed to develop and individuals body, mind, and spirit.  This in  turn enhances one's character, integrity and respect for all living  things..

If I wanted to get my Black Belt how long would it take?

It all depends on the individual student and how dedicated he/she  trains.. The average person will take about  3 1/2 years to earn their  black belt..

What is the difference between Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do?

Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art stemming from traditional  Chinese, Japanese, and Korean roots. Tang Soo Do encourages the learning  of mental and physical discipline by learning hand and foot techniques,  joint locks and throws to defend one’s self.      Tae Kwon Do formally organized by General Hong Hi Choi, was geared  to be more of a sport martial art, like seen on the Olympics. Tae Kwon  Do is a compilation of many Korean martial arts that was unified by the  Korean government after the Japanese occupation.

If Tang Soo Do Is An Effective Fighting Style, How Can It Be Non-Violent In Nature?

True non-violence is based on a sense of inner strength and  self-confidence. Tang Soo Do techniques are defensive, and aggressive  behavior among students is not tolerated. Although we will defend  ourselves when given no choice, the self-confidence developed by  learning Tang Soo Do promotes the discipline and awareness to avoid  violent confrontations.
